TGCA announces rosters for All-Star games

Jan. 15 — The Texas Girls Coaches Association today announced rosters for this year's All-Star Games, which will be played July 6 at TCU.

Playing in this year's event will be Michael Faulkner of St. Michael's Academy in Austin and a member of the LoneStarVolleyball All-Texas Team. Faulkner, who will be on the 1A-3A West team, is thought to be the first player from a private school to compete in the All-Star Game.

"We do not believe we have ever had a private school participant in the TGCA volleyball All-Star game prior to this year," said Sam Tipton, executive director of the TGCA.

TGCA regions are aligned differently than UIL regions, which means that occasionally two players from the same district will compete on different teams. That happened this year where J.J. Jones from Allen will play on the East team while Emily Bertrand from Lake Highlands will play for the West. Both teams compete in District 9-5A.

Patti Zenner (Poth) and Teresa Sitton (Jewett Leon) will coach the East 1A-3A team while Janiece Nelson (Hutto) and Amy Bohensky (Bronte) will coach the West team. Al Bennett (Westlake) and Brandi Cantrell (Lubbock Coronado) will coach the 4A-5A West stars while Kelley Gregoriew (Allen) and Renata Goebel (San Antonio Madison) will coach the East stars.
