TAV 17s, Alamo 16s claim Lone Star qualifier titlesApril 26 - It was all Texas in the 16s and 17s finals of the Mizuno Lone Star Classic qualifier Sunday as Texas Advantage took down Austin Juniors in 17s and Alamo knocked off Texas Tornados in 16s.Alamo was looking for an Open bid to this summer's national championship which had eluded the defending national champs at two previous qualifiers. They finished first in a brutal Gold pool that included Texas Advantage, Dallas Skyline and Willowbrook. All four teams entered their final match at 1-1. Alamo beat Willowbrook to win the pool (because of a win over Skyline), guaranteeing a bid, and Skyline knocked off TAV to earn a bid and a spot in the third place match. The opponent in that match was Austin Juniors, which finished second to Texas Tornados in pool play thus earning another Open bid for a Texas team. Austin beat Skyline for third. In 17s, TAV and Austin had met in pool play in the second round with Austin coming out on top, but both swept through their Gold pools on Saturday and Sunday to set up a rematch in the finals. TAV already had a bid and Austin picked up one by advancing the the championship match. In 18s, Houston Juniors picked up a bid by finishing second in Gold pool play and advancing to the third place match against Texas Tornados, which had earned a bid earlier this year. The Tornados won the third place match. Yahoo knocked off Sky High in the 18s championship. Texas also picked up bids in Club play. Texas Tornados Dan defeated Diamondback for the 18 championship, earning a bid. Circle City defeated Texas Advantage National for the 17 championship. Because TAV had already earned a bid, AIM Kaepa received a bid with its third place finish. Bexar County defeated Texas Image for the 16 championship, with both teams earning a bid. Here is a recap of the championship matches. 17s Championship Round three went to TAV, which took the 17 Open championship at Lone Star with a 25-23, 16-25, 15-9 win over rival Austin Juniors. Trailing 21-17, TAV outscored Austin 8-3 behind the kills of Lauren Otto and Lindsey Peterson. Austin jumped up quick again in game 2 with big play at the net by Natalie Peters, Kelsey Bryant and Tori Thompson. This time they didn't let it get away. In game three, Otto and Amy Weigle led a 6-0 TAV outburst that broke open a 7-5 game. The teams basically traded points until Peterson ended it with a crushing kill. This was the third meeting between the two powerhouses. TAV won the first meeting earlier this season. Austin won the second meeting during second round pool play at Lone Star. In the third place match, Circle City beat Gainesville. 16s Championship Trailing Texas Tornados 10-7 in game three of the championship match, Alamo turned to Mary Batis, Jenny Banse and lefty Megan Mcdougall to change the momentum. They delivered with five kills and Banse and McDougall also combined with a huge block as Alamo rallied to a 25-20, 22-25, 15-11 win for the Open championship. In the third place game, Austin Juniors beat Dallas Skyline in three, 15-12. Earlier in the day, Texas Advantage knocked off Alamo 25-19, 20-25, 15-12 in pool play. The teams traded points in game three until Sara Humphrey, who had five kills in the game, put down two in a row to give TAV an 11-8 lead. After Alamo cut the lead to 11-10, Humphrey put one down, Alamo's Batis hit wide and Banse hit long to put TAV at match point. Alamo cut the lead to 14-12 before Kristin Marcum ripped the match winner into the middle of the court. It was TAV's second win over Alamo this year. In the match for the second place, Dallas Skyline fell behind early in both games but rallied to beat Texas Advantage and advance to the third place match. Alamo knocked off Willowbrook behind the play of Samantha Dabbs and Jessica Glover in the other playoff to advance to the championship match. 18s Championship In a match between Sky High and Yahoo that featured big plays by big players, it was little 5'8" Michaela Donohue who came up biggest. With Yahoo clinging to a 9-8 lead in game three of the championship match, Donohue produced four straight points on perfectly placed shots to help Yahoo extend its lead to 13-9. They held on thanks to a huge block by Chelsea Reilley and Bethany Johansen then a kill by Reilley to finish off the 15-11 win for the title. Texas Tornados defeated Houston Juniors for third, with Houston picking up another Open bid for Texas. The Tornados had earned one earlier this season. Complete results |
