Windthorst starts strong in quest for seven-peat

The 2002 version of the Trojanettes celebrate the school's sixth straight state title. Team members included Hayley Humpert, Joey Stevens, Megan Teichmann, Tessa Sales, Amber Wolf, Allison Schreiber, Hilary Hoff, Kenda Schroeder, Kandis Schroeder, Aubrey Humpert, Danielle Veitenheimer, Shelby Moer, Whitney Humpert, Kalynne Meurer, Amanda Ostermann, Brittany Schroeder, Paula Koetter, Heather Veitenheimer and Laura Geyer.

Is a seven-peat in the winds for consecutive volleyball state championships? The Trojanettes of Windthorst are breathing fire right off the bat and may indeed be that team of destiny.

"We take one day at a time, play well mentally as well as physically," said Windthorst head Stacy Wolf.

The Trojanettes approach to volleyball has paid dividends already this season as they opened with a win and tough loss to class 4A Stephenville. They followed by winning the championship of the Hotter than Hell Invitational beating host Wichita Falls in the finals 25-12, 25-20 as Kandis Schroeder had 30 kills, Allison Schreiber had 17 kills and 27 assists and Kenda Schroeder had 37 assists. They followed that with a double-header sweep of Breckenridge 25-7, 25-14, 25-21 and Sweetwater 25-10, 25-15, 25-17 to keep on rolling.

Coach Wolf

“I believe the mental game will be a huge factor this year. It will take quite a bit of focus to go five games. And, of course, a great deal of ball control. We focus every day on ball control and situations,” Wolf said.

Windthorst won state titles in 1992-93-94 then watched as Round top Carmine claimed back to back crowns in 1995 and 96 but the Trojanettes have won every year since then and are poised to make it seven in a row.

Round top Carmine, two-time winners who have finished second the past four years and are once again powerful but probably the second best 1A team again this year.

Wolf keeps a sane perspective despite the mounting glory.

“My girls are working hard and really having fun. Most people think it is all work, and we do work hard, but the girls get along and respect one another's ability but we usually have really weird goofy things happen to us, so we have a good laugh just about every day," Wolf said.

6'0" junior Kandis Schroeder, show here during last year's state tournament, is one big reason Windthorst is favored again.

Members of the Trojanettes team this season are Kenda Schroeder, Kandis Schroeder, Tessa Sales, Cathy Meurer, Danielle Veitenheimer, Sabrina Johnston, Kelly Schreiber, Megan Teichman, Shelby Moer, Allison Schreiber, Joey Stevens and Hilary Hoff. Coach Wolf is assisted by Brenda Doyal and Kristin Berend. Student managers are Aubrey Humpert, Amber Wolf, Hayley Humpert, Whitney Humpert, Mylie Wilde and Chelsie Steinberger.
