UIL To Survey Schools On Adding 4th Playoff Team

June 11 — Superintendents across the state will decide this fall whether to allow an additional team from each district to advance to the playoffs in volleyball and other team sports. Currently, the top three teams from each district in Conferences 2A-5A make the playoffs, with the first place team receiving a Bye in the first round in all sports except football. The additional team would provide an opponent for the first place team.

The UIL Legislative Council Standing Committee on Athletics announced Tuesday that schools will be surveyed on the issue of restructuring the playoffs in all team sports.

The Council also announced that schools will be surveyed about:
... allowing the top three finishers at district track meets to advance to the regional meets;
... making the softball playoff structure more consistent with baseball, by permitting a coin flip to determine a one game or three game playoff series if the coaches do not agree, will also be placed on the survey.

In other action, the UIL Legislative Council Standing Committee on Athletics rejected the following proposals:
… adding mixed doubles to Spring tennis;
… requiring monitors at district and regional golf tournaments;
… establishing qualifying times to determine competitors at golf and swimming state meets;
… increasing the pitching distance in softball.

The Standing Committee on Policy instructed the UIL staff to conduct a comprehensive study of reclassification and realignment issues, and present any findings at the October Legislative Council meeting. The study is intended to find possible solutions for the difficulties of Conference 1A, as well as alleviate problems in other Conferences.

The Policy Committee also rejected a proposal to allow El Paso Cathedral High School to apply for membership in the UIL.
