Tornados 18s Capture 3rd Coast Championship June 7 – Texas Tornados 18 Kaepa put on a defensive clinic Saturday shutting down Alamo 18 Kaepa 25-11, 25-22, 25-22 to capture the Championship Division of the Mizuno Third Coast Volleyball Championships. “Our defense was great,” said Tornados coach Chuck Schneider, whose team lost only one game in going undefeated over the three-day event and looks primed for nationals. “Last year everyone said they thought the team peaked too soon, but this year we’re peaking at just the right time. Ever since we beat Spri at the Lone Star quaifier we’ve really been playing with a lot of confidence.” Saturday they also played a lot of “D”, with Becca Sartori, Kate Street, Kelly McAnelly and Jenny Andrew throwing up a wall of blocks against Alamo’s big hitters. And anything that made it past the block was scooped up by Libero Stephanie Figgers, even if it meant she had to fly into the netting separating the courts (a play she made against Dallas Skyline earlier in the day that left her trying to untangle herself while action continued). Sartori and McAnelly, often overshadowed by the Tornados roster of offensive weapons, were also strong on the attack all day. The Tornados advanced to the championship with a sweep of both Skyline and Houston Juniors in morning pool play. Alamo advanced to the finals with a straight set win over Austin Juniors 18 Navy then outlasted Austin Juniors 17s Navy in five. “I think we’re ready for nationals,” said Schneider, whose team will play one more warm-up tournament next weekend. “If we can keep playing defense like this we should do well.” Play continues through Sunday at the Austin Convention Center in the 12-18 club and high school divisions.
